Dance dementia and Alzheimer’s away

Regular social interaction plays a vital role in keeping older people happy and healthy.


Yes, it’s true! Not only is dancing good for the heart, lungs and joints but, according to research, older people who take part in regular dance classes show a reduced incidence of dementia. And that’s not all, research also shows that dancing helps with Alzheimer’s because it keeps the mind active and alert when the dancer concentrates on his or her steps and moves.

“Dance is the language of the soul, there is no age limit” says Rosie Allen-Perdikeas. Many older people grew up in the time of the big bands and music hall dances, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers, ABBA and even the Beatles. Reliving those times through music and dance makes them feel young again. Katherine Jenkins sums it up perfectly: “When I dance, I forget everything else and just feel completely happy.”

Dance is so versatile that you can do it standing, seated (roll those shoulders, stomp your feet, clap your hands and punch the air) and even in a wheelchair!
