Participation Participants help campaign
If you would like to participate in the campaign to create awareness about the elderly in South Africa, please let us know who you are and your contact details. We welcome every participant and every effort that you are willing to make. If you have any ideas, to further this cause, please let us know. For this pilot campaign, we will ask you to:
- Negotiate with your local council and any other applicable authority for permission to display the turquoise colour as much as possible.
- Request businesses, churches, individuals, etc to participate and donate turquoise items or donate funds to purchase turquoise items.
- Get assistance to put up the decorations along streets, around old-age homes, in shopping centres etc. and to take them down after the campaign
- Inform your local media about the campaign

How can we help the elderly?
- There are several actions which we as a community can become part of.
Determine what “VALUE IT WILL ADD to the ELDERLY’S LIFE!”
Make Turquoise ribbonsand hand it out to make people aware of the fact that there is a project going on and explain in detail when it is presented
Encourage institutions, persons, schools, churches and businesses to cover trees, poles and other constructions with turquoise material.
Wednesday 16 May 2018 Celebration at the Voortrekker Monument on the Amfidak from 09:00 to 13:00. The cost is R30-00 per person. POSSIBLE ACTIONS FOR ASSISTANCE AND/OR “TREATS”FOR ELDERLY:
OLD-AGE HOMES, RETIREMENT VILLAGES, ETC.
Sponsor the water and/or electricity for a month or a specific period
Sponsor certain foods eg. meat or vegetables for a month or a period or try to get institutions to do it
Replace curtains, linen (bed-linen or table linens)
Organize a group of people who can work in the garden
Pay an electrician to repair plugs, lights, switches ect.
Paint as needed
Organize a monthly donation or to make a donation
SELF CATERING UNITS, THE ELDERLY WHO STILL LIVE INDEPENDENTLY
Involve persons who stay alone to attend actions of the community
Parcels with detergents, toilet paper and household items such as coffee, tea and sugar, can be delivered.
Bring a “food bank” under the attention of the elderly who experinece financial difficulty
Accompanyelderly to the State hospital or clinic.
Assist with maintenance of the house, replace light bulbs, broken locks, broken window panes, taps that leak and garden duties.
Arrange transport for shopping or church.
Organize a day where mechanics voluntarily attend to cars and fix small items.
CHILDREN OF ELDERLY
Encourage children of the elderly to continue to visit or have regular contact with their parents.
Encourage deacons and elders to show interest in the elderly of the congregation and to visit them and to determine their needs.
Arrange at pharmacies or doctors to supply vitamins and or flu vaccine before winter
Organize volunteers to get involved with elderly persons through chats, visits, lifts, hospital or doctor visit, etc.
Get an informed speaker to explain SASSA allowances and the working there of.
Involve the community’s children, (schools, ect) to visit the elderly and hand them Turquoise ribbons or scarves.
